22-25.02 Weekend in Christchurch

We had a little trip to see Sara & Matt in Christchurch! We also had to activate our working holiday visas too, as we had a couple of weeks left on our apartment in Melbourne before we could move properly. To 'ease' the move over the 'ditch' we had packed up a load of bits so that we could max out our luggage allowance!

The Friday was set aside to do the stuff that you have to do when setting yourselves up; open bank accounts, get IRD numbers, and sort out a tourist visa for Australia. Sounds simple doesn't it? The bank account was opened on the second attempt, as we didn't have a proof of address for the first branch, but the second branch didn't worry about that! We didn't quite get to the IRD office...

Unfortunately the rest of the afternoon was spent with Markella from Flight Centre on Colombo Street! We wandered in and explained our situation: We wanted a tourist visa to run on from our working holiday so we could stay in Oz until the end the our rental agreement. We were told by the people at immi.gov.au that we could apply online offshore - we couldn't as we had a current visa. We phoned the helpline - no answer, so left a message. Tried another number - got an answer but the person wasn't in Australia and didn't speak English!

So we asked Markella whether she could sort the visa out for us, for which she replied 'we're not immigration agents'! After three hours, faxes, telephone calls and being questioned by someone at the Australian Consulate, and with a few minutes to go before they closed for the weekend we were granted the visa! One that would activate after our working holiday had expired! Poor Markella didn't know that it was going to be this much fun! She did sort out our flights from Melbourne to Brisbane (for Easter), then back to Christchurch!!

Now all of the above wouldn't have been so bad, had Joanna & I had been on our own, but we had met up with Matt (Pitts), and in fact this was his second time round of sitting in Flight Centre orgainising flights & visas in as many weeks! But all was sorted!

A trip down to Sumner: Matt, Sara & NathanJoanna & Nathan at Sumner BeachOn Saturday we took a short trip to Sumner to enjoy the Sun, Sea & Surf!

You don't really need to go to these events, as you're able to see many of these as daily transport!

Meeting up with Matt in more relaxed & open surrounds, compared to the red interior of Flight Centre! After enjoying a delicious lunch from one of the many takeaway vans! Slightly better surroundings to the one where we spent most of our time on Friday!

Lyttleton FestivalThe afternoon was spent at the Lyttleton Festival! Before we had to leave for our return flight back to Oz.

After returning to Melbourne we expected a grilling from Customs over our visas, so we had all our documentation to prove our funds/onward travel/accommodation status, but we weren't asked a single question!

09.12 Grampians: Great Ocean Road

Unfortuantely when we hit the GOR, the weather wasn't quite what we expected! And we didn't expect it to be such an eventful journey either!

Not looking too cold are they?!The Bay of IslandsThe Bay of Islands!

Gibsons StepsOn the beach at Gibsons Steps!

At some point after leaving the Gibsons Steps we came up behind a 'Crazy Queenslander' (the car was registered in QLD), who was driving a little erratically.

We came across some roads works (road works here normally mean a few signs, reduced speed limit and a lot of gravel!) down a steep incline, so we slowed right down and saw the 'crazy queenslander' disappear at speed round the bend at the bottom.

When we got round the bend there was glass, hub caps and plastic mouldings from a car over the road. We looked to our left and our friend was pointing the wrong way towards a muddy bank down a small turning, with both occupants looking a little shocked!

He had managed to roll his hire car - small marks in the road indicated where the wheels & the roof had hit while it was sumersaulting, plus the glass deposit from the rear screen! Somehow he had avoided rolling straight into the nearby river!

It turned out our 'crazy queenslander' was a Chinese fellow, who had given himself a bit of 'road-rash' on the journey 'round' and his wife a serious bit of concussion! Luckily there weren't any serious injuries, as it took the emergency services about 30mins to reach us! The event did shake us all up a bit though, but fortunately we were joined by a number of other passing motorists!

Moonlight HeadMoonlight Head, which is at the end of a pretty dodgy unsealed road, plus a couple of bogans driving some old Datsun at full pelt too - not the best thing to see after what we'd come across earlier!

Moonlight HeadMoonlight Head is well known for its ship wrecks, in fact two anchors lie on the beach from two ships. You can just see one of them in the water, just to the left where the cliff meets the beach/water.

08.12 Grampians: Mount William Sunset

The highest point in the Grampians is Mount William, so where better to watch the sunset?! It was an 10kms drive up a steep and very twisty road, followed by a 2kms march - Joanna still had her Melbourne legs on her!!

08.12 Grampians: Boroka Lookout

Today was going to be a day exploring the North Grampians and doing all the tourist sights along the way. Our first port of call was the Boroka Lookout, looking back towards Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield where we walked the evening before!

07.12 Grampians: Hall Gap Lake Bellfield

An evening stroll along the very imposing wall that stood high above our campsite formed part of the local dam, Lake Bellfield! As you can see it was certainly lacking some water, and had done so for some time!

07.12 Grampians: Halls Gap Lakeside Caravan Park

In a desperate bid to catch, we have managed to compile the following posts for our weekend trip to the Grampians! I think that this will bring our blogs for 2007 to a close, and hopefully allow us to get back on track with 2008!!

After a couple of hours driving we arrived at Halls Gap, which is pretty much in the centre of the Grampians. We stayed in a campsite called Halls Gap Lakeside Caravan Park, which was situated just outside the town next to the local dam!

Using the kangaroo sh*t shifting stick!First job was to clear the kangaroo pooh with the aptly named 'kangaroo sh*t shifting stick'!

25.11 You Yangs Regional Park & Brisbane Ranges

We took a day trip out to the You Yangs Regional Park and the Brisbane Ranges, which are situated just outside Melbourne.

On the way up to Flinders PeakJoanna & Matt at the LookoutMelbourne in the distance! The walk up to Flinders Peak. It's the highest point in the You Yangs. It was a fairly clear day so we could see the Brisbane Ranges, Geelong, and our 'city by the bay'!

Koala Country! The burnt Brisbane Ranges!Burnt bush coming back to life!We had read that the Brisbane Ranges were the place to see the largest concentration of Koalas in Victoria. However, I think that was before the bushfires had swept through! You can see the burnt remains of the trees amongst the rejuvenating vegetatation. The stark contrast between the bright fresh greens, charcoal blacks and the bright blue sky don't quite come out in the photos here.

18.11 Matt WWOOFing: Swan Bay

We spent the day on the Bellarine Peninsular, where Matt was WWOOFing (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) just outside Queenscliff. The only task that day was to bring in three fishing boats...

Boat to TrailerThe first boat to the trailer. Had a small issue with getting the engine to lock in position while it was running. There was also a strong wind blowing too, which blew the boat back towards the pier!

Have waders, will use them! He's in!Gettign there! So with the waders on, Matt jumps in to man-handle the boat towards the trailer, with the wind blowing, and Matt slowly sinking into the mud of the bay!

Finally the boat is loaded! Finally the boat is winched onto the trailer!

What's that?!It's at this point that a digital camera & mobile phone are produced from the pockets! Unfortunately they didn't work again. If this ever happens to you, apparently (a web search revealed) you should rinse the goods down immediately with distilled water and let them dry out slowly.

Reflect & RelaxThe other two boats were much easier! The trama of first obviously took its toll!
